Sub and Parent Org Units
Sub Org Units and Parent Org Units are a way of layering the Org Units in your organisation.
Org Units are very useful for managing the Assignments of People and the Permissions of Users. The more accurately the Org Units reflect the natural groupings within the organisation, the easier this becomes.
For example, you can create Org Units for larger collections, like Regional and Metro locations. Then each individual location will have either Metro or Regional as a Parent Org Unit. This allows you to set permissions so one user can manage the Metro Org Unit, including all Sub Org Units, but won't have the same access to regional locations. Setting assignments to Parent Org Units will automatically apply to Sub Org Units. This means you can Assign a Requirement that is Regional-specific to all relevant locations by assigning it to the Regional Org Unit. This example is demonstrated with the diagram below.
Tip: It is a good idea to have a Parent Org Unit called 'All Staff' or something similar.
Creating a new Sub Org Unit
When creating an Org Unit, there is an option to select a Parent Org Unit which will be 'None' as default. To make this a Sub Org Unit, simply change the selection to any existing Org Unit.
Converting an existing Org Unit to a Sub Org Unit and vice versa
- Use the edit button on the individual page of any existing Org Unit. Then change the 'Parent Org Unit' selection to another existing Org Unit.
- Select 'none' if you don't want it to be a Sub Org Unit.
